In early 2021 I took a leap of faith and started working in Web3, joining a small team breaking off from the Yearn Finance DAO.
The team had set off to imagine and build a new kind of compensation system for DAOs, and they needed help bringing their vision to life. Working closely with Coordinape's founders, as the only design contributor, I designed the MVP product and interface used by teams like Bankless, Aragon, Index Coop, Pool Together, DAOHaus, Gitcoin, and MetaCartel.
In December 2021, I managed to recruit two talented designers, Sascha Mombartz and Ivy Quinzel, onto the core team. Together we began to refine the Vaults feature while also overhauling the rest of the Coordinape's UI. We moved to our first real design system while introducing improvements to existing functionality and new features like contributions.
After launching the initial MVP, we iterated on the UI, adding new ways that circles could be viewed, configured and managed. In the fall of 2021 I started work on our first true on-chain features, Vaults, which when launched will allow users to fund a circle with stablecoins or ERC-20 tokens and automatically distribute those tokens to contributors at the end of a Coordinape cycle.
In order to validate those concepts further, I later made a number of interactive Figma prototypes and ran a series of user testing sessions with current and past Coordinape users where they interacted with prototypes of potential new features and offered their opinion on what met their needs. All of these sessions were processed and annotated using Dovetail, helping us make sense of what people said, refine the features and identify which were likely to get traction with the broader user base.
In late 2021 the team began investing in user research and by February, we had interviewed a wide range of Coordinape users and DAO contributors. We began processing and analyzing that data in Dovetail, eventually refining that into the foundational customer insights that would drive our next round of product improvements. After we had completed this synthesis, I lead the team in a series of brainstorm and prototyping sessions to identify and bring to life product concepts inspired by the customer needs we uncovered.
